Abstract
Greek and Latin authors provide evidence for the importance of the words that were painted or engraved on images helping in their identification and interpretation. In the perspective of an ancient observer (and of a modern one as well) some inscriptions seem to have played a particular role in transferring a ʻvocal potentiality’ to the images. Focusing on the ʻvocal characterization’ of the ancient images and particularly those expressed by the Roman culture, the paper will consider the whole spectrum of scenes – from the more simple with people reading to the more complex examples with ʻcomics’ expressing sentences – in order to propose some reflections on the relationship between epigraphy and visual arts.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
