Abstract

Welfare structures’ study can be counted among the major medieval archaeology research areas – even if less wrought than others. The extra-urban hospitals represent a diversified and heterogeneous case of study, especially if compared with the more investigated urban ones. The contribution, a joint work carried out by the universities of Urbino, Bologna and Padova, presents the definitive data referable to the Misericordia Complex (church and hospital) stratigraphic excavation. The complex, outside Monte Copiolo’s castle (PU) walls, is located in the central Italian Appennines, along itineraries connecting the Adriatic Coast with the Alta Valtiberina and the Tyrrhenian Coast. At the current studies, it is the only extensively excavated hospital in the Historic Romagna region. The research aim at the diachronic understanding of structures and artifacts, and at the anthropological analysis of the seven burials emerged in the church.
