Abstract

On the 23rd of January 2019, after a sudden and brief illness, Gastone Buttarini, a leading figure in the context of the archaeological restoration in Libya, unexpectedly left us. He began his collaboration with the Italian Archaeological Mission at Cyrene of the Università di Urbino in the year 1971, participating in the anastylosis and restoration of the Temple of Zeus. He continued to work in Libya for almost fifty years, overseeing the restoration of numerous monuments, in particular in Cyrene (the Monumental Altars of the Agora, the Exedra of Pratomedes, the Greek Propylaeum, the Temple of Demeter and many other ancient buildings), Lepcis Magna (Severan Tetrapylon) and Sabratha (Punic Mausoleum). He should be included in the list of skilled restorers that have marked the history of Italian archeology from the 20th century in the Mediterranean.
