Pitinum Pisaurense was located in northern inland part of Marche (near to present-day town of Macerata Feltria). The Roman municipium was known since Renaissance mostly via its inclusion in the text of Pliny the Elder and from chance finds (especially from inscriptions). Proper archaeological research began in 1970 but the urban planning and even the limits of this municipality are still unknown. In June 2013, a new series of excavation campaigns began in the archaeological area. The trenches were positioned based on the geophysical survey undertaken in 2012, which seemed to identify parts of the urban structures. The excavations have brought to light new evidences from distinct phases of Pitinum Pisaurense occupation, dating back from 3rd-2nd century BC to VII century AD. The archaeological data doesn’t testify a sudden abandonment, but a human presence that has gradually rarefied. City buildings, also prestigious, were deserted and a necropolis have been installed on the forum area. This paper describes an integrated approach to the discovery, study and cultural heritage valorization and its application in the context of the Pitinum Pisaurense archaeological project.
