Abstract

We propose a reflection on the rhetorical mechanism which, according to Laclau, is responsible for the “construction of a people” and, at the same time, for all kinds of hegemony: the synecdoche. The distinction between two types of synecdoche, i.e., the substitution of the whole by the part (pars pro toto) and the part by the whole (totum pro parte), leads us to reflect on the social content of the people as the object of hegemonic construction and on different types of “populism”.
