The aim of this paper is to analyze the colometry of the first stasimon of Aeschylus’ Choephoroi, as it was transmitted by the manuscript M (Laurenziano 32.9). The metrical texture of the entire song is almost entirely iambic with one exception, the second strophic pair, where there occur dochmiacs and glyconics. I will try to pick out how this metrical variation has a clear connection with the semantic level of the text and how the emendations of modern editors, who would analyze the second strophic pair as iambic, obscure this connection between metrical-rhythmical typologies and thematic cores.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the colometry of the first stasimon of Aeschylus’ Choephoroi, as it was transmitted by the manuscript M (Laurenziano 32.9). The metrical texture of the entire song is almost entirely iambic with one exception, the second strophic pair, where there occur dochmiacs and glyconics. I will try to pick out how this metrical variation has a clear connection with the semantic level of the text and how the emendations of modern editors, who would analyze the second strophic pair as iambic, obscure this connection between metrical-rhythmical typologies and thematic cores.
