The article sustains two main theses. The first is that fideism must not be confused with irrationalism, since it usually contradicts a concept of reason considered inadequate for seeking truth in the religious sphere, not the exercise of reason itself. In this sense, fideism holds a position that is more “suprarational” than “irrational”. The second thesis is that fideism’s essence consists of refusing to seek rational arguments to defend the faith when it is challenged. The case of natural theology, which I am considering in the article, has to be seen as an exemplary case together with that of theodicy.
