Abstract

Although French is the official language of many African countries, depending on the region and the sociolinguistic context, there are many specificities that diverge from the standard of metropolitan France. This is the case in Cameroon, where local rules are favoured to determine a language that corresponds to the construction of the country's identity. In particular, Camfranglais is a composite language developed by young Cameroonians to communicate with each other. This article outlines the historical framework of this language and illustrates its many lexical, morphological and syntactic properties.
