Poems too Short to constitute a Strophe: Some Examples of Tragic astropha · The aim of the article is to analyse the meaning of the term ἄστροφα in the ancient metrical theory, highlighting the diferences compared to the modern meaning. According to the Hephaestion’ handbook the astropha are very short compositions lacking strophic responsion: among the possible examples of this structure in the surviving tragic texts Aesch. Choeph. 869-871, Soph. El. 1160-1162, Tr. 1081 and 1085- 1086 are examined.
