In this contribution we propose a reconstruction of the cultural, ideological and poetic context on which the episode of the so-called valletta dei principi (valley of the princes), contained in the seventh canto of Purgatorio, is based. The overall reading of this passage suggests that Dante’s judgment on the most relevant protagonists of European history during the second half of the 13th century is mainly influenced by the Occitan poetry of anti-Angevin inspiration, widespread in Central Italy through several Provençal songbooks, but also by the political debate emerging among Tuscan municipal poets, especially Monte Andrea and his correspondents.
