The article focuses on the anthropological roots of war and peace. The Author, after assuming that man is a personal being, illustrates Spaemann's conception of recognition as the root of the person and as a form of the drama of individual history and of the history of humanity. The uniqueness and incommensurability of each person produce the possibility of conflict in the dynamics of recognition; the conflict, however, can be managed with justice: politics intervenes by giving juridical form to the conflict and producing justice, wich is the true form of peace. If justice is not achieved, conflict becomes war. In this context, the meaning of both war and peace emerges as alternative forms of conflict between people.
