This is the first monograph on a church in central Rome, usually closed to the public, that, soon after the present book was published, became a jubilee church. Not far from an area occupied in the 14th century by the convent of Sant'Aurea castri senensis, later suppressed, on the so-called Via Magistralis, today Via Giulia, the first Sienese national church was built, later demolished (but in the book virtually reconstructed) to make room for another, more beautiful and larger church, also dedicated to St. Catherine of Siena, like the previous one. The book reconstructs step by step the history of these two churches (focusing on their architectural structure, decoration, patrons, architects, and artists from Rome, Tuscany, and even foreigners who worked there) that unfolded over two hundred and fifty years, based on an in-depth study of sources and largely unpublished documents, mainly kept in the Archives of the Venerable Archconfraternity of St. Catherine of Siena, which is usually not accessible to scholars.

Abstract
Catherine of Siena, which is usually not accessible to scholars.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
