Abstract

Giulio Cantalamessa’s paintings on historical subjects include Marozia and Ugo of Tuscany before the Corpse of Pope John X, a very late work (c.1884-85), previously only known through some vague written references. Although the current whereabouts of the painting are still unknown, this paper offers some clues about its previous history until the 1970s. More importantly, thanks to a photograph preserved in a small group of recently rediscovered private papers, we now have an image of this unpublished work.
