The thesis focuses on the Garibaldian volunteers who fought in the Expedition of the Thousand, one of the main military undertaking of the Italian Risorgimento. Adopting a primarily social approach, the research aims at pointing out that Garibaldi’s troops were not exclusively composed by middle class people, merchants and students, but also by unskilled workers, outsiders and other individuals coming from the lower social ranks. Although the volunteers of the popular classes were a minority compared to the entire Garibaldian army, their presence clearly indicates that the volunteers who took part in the Expedition of the Thousand were a heterogeneous group of people, unlike historiography traditionally showed. The mobilization of entire families – women included – who actively supported the Expedition and joined the Garibaldi’s army is another central issue. Finally, when the war was over the thesis shows that creating networks of solidarity was crucial especially for lower classes veterans in order to receive honours and benefits granted by the government.
