SincethepublicationofPennycookandcolleagues’(2015)paperonthereceptionofpseudo-profoundbullshit, theconceptofbullshit(BS)receptivityhasslowlygainedinterestasanindividualcharacteristicofpeoplewith thetendencytobeoverlyreceptiveofandsensitivetofakeclaims.Thispaperseekstoidentifyanddiscuss peer-reviewedliteraturethatappliesBSreceptivityscales,tobetterdefinetheirrolewithinthebiggerpictureof thecharacteristicsof thoseindividualsparticularlypronetothereceptionofawholerangeofoutlandishbeliefs. Consideringthecross-cuttingnatureof theissue,weprompt theneedfor furtherempiricalandapplicative research,andunderlinethat–withBSreceptivitybelongingtothesetofdeterminantscontributingtoflawed decision-makingintermsofspottinggenuinefromfakecontent–greater involvementofbehavioraleconomists isdesirable.Wecall forsuchinvolvementnotonlywithintheBSdebate,butalsoinassistingpolicymakersin theirhardtaskofdevelopingtailoredpolicyresponsesanddigital literacyinterventionstocombatmisinformation anddisinformationat itsroots.
