This paper presents the preliminary study undertaken by the University of Urbino with the purpose of reconstructing the urban topography of Pitinum Mergens, a Roman town near the modern centre of Acqualagna (PU). The study deals with the data obtained from old aerial pictures and recently-acquired satellite images. It will be crucial for the next phase of the project, which will involve extensive survey using non-invasive methods, particularly geophysical prospecting, to verify the traces acquired through aerial photointerpretation. The data collected so far have allowed us to develop for the first time a general plan of ancient Pitinum Mergens. This plan includes the current state of the area from the perspective of previous archaeological evidence, such as those from sporadic discoveries, archaeological excavations and traces (cropmarks) visible in aerial and satellite photos.
