This study examines choral lyric songs in the 'dochmiac style', with a particular focus on pindaric work. This style is characterised by a prevalence of dochmii, a measure typically associated with tragedy. It is hypothesised that odes in this style, with their abundance of dochmiac metres, were influenced by the style of Aeschylean theatre. A context conducive to contact and exchange between artists, and to their emulation and mutual imitation, could have been the court of the tyrant Hieron of Syracuse in the 470s BCE.

Abstract

This study examines choral lyric songs in the 'dochmiac style', with a particular focus on pindaric work. This style is characterised by a prevalence of dochmii, a measure typically associated with tragedy. It is hypothesised that odes in this style, with their abundance of dochmiac metres, were influenced by the style of Aeschylean theatre. A context conducive to contact and exchange between artists, and to their emulation and mutual imitation, could have been the court of the tyrant Hieron of Syracuse in the 470s BCE.
