A review of extant scholarly positions regarding the ancient notion of parakatalogē is presented in this paper, which then sets out an analysis of the use of iambic trimeter in lyricis in Aeschylus’ tragedies. The purpose is to identify possible parameters that would allow us to distinguish its different modes of performance: spoken, recitative, parakatalogē and song.
