The Roman theater of Urbino, the ancient Urvinum Mataurense, was discovered and partially excavated in 1943, during World War II. Some exploratory excavations and a reconstructive plan were conducted in 1975 under the direction of Mario Luni from the University of Urbino, but the building soon fell back into obscurity. In 2014, following a project to enhance the Roman theater, an extensive excavation of the remaining structures was initiated. This was followed by a study of the materials and architectural structure and a virtual reconstruction hypothesis of the entire monument. This project was a collaboration between Superintendency, University of Urbino and Municipality of Urbino.
