The jarring contradiction between what we live every day and what we believe has become unacceptable. In contemporary Western society, ethics have been almost neutralized. Dominating everything is the concept of progress – scientific, technological, economic. Yet, everywhere we can see the signs of lacerating social inequalities and rampant cultural poverty. This contribution reminds us of the importance of imagining an alternative social model, based on a different way of understanding growth, on the use value of common goods and on conviviality; a lifestyle capable of promoting what Alexander Langer defined as "the green virtues" of the future: awareness of limits, balance, ecological conversion and conscientious objection to consumerism.

Abstract
The jarring contradiction between what we live every day and what we believe has become unacceptable. In contemporary Western society, ethics have been almost neutralized. Dominating everything is the concept of progress – scientific, technological, economic. Yet, everywhere we can see the signs of lacerating social inequalities and rampant cultural poverty. This contribution reminds us of the importance of imagining an alternative social model, based on a different way of understanding growth, on the use value of common goods and on conviviality; a lifestyle capable of promoting what Alexander Langer defined as "the green virtues" of the future: awareness of limits, balance, ecological conversion and conscientious objection to consumerism.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
