This paper presents two “pictorial cartoons” from a private collection, depicting details of the portraits of Justinian and Theodora from the mosaics of San Vitale in Ravenna. They are signed by Libera Musiani, a famous member of the Scuola del Mosaico who, in the inter-war period, made many copies of mosaics in Ravenna’s churches, which are now kept in the Museo d’Arte della città di Ravenna. In addition to the technical presentation of the two artefacts, an attempt will be made to outline the historical events that led to the two cartoons coming into the possession of the historian and archaeologist Roberto Paribeni.

Abstract
This paper presents two “pictorial cartoons” from a private collection, depicting details of the portraits of Justinian and Theodora from the mosaics of San Vitale in Ravenna. They are signed by Libera Musiani, a famous member of the Scuola del Mosaico who, in the inter-war period, made many copies of mosaics in Ravenna’s churches, which are now kept in the Museo d’Arte della città di Ravenna. In addition to the technical presentation of the two artefacts, an attempt will be made to outline the historical events that led to the two cartoons coming into the possession of the historian and archaeologist Roberto Paribeni.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
