Augustus in Cyrene : Restorations, Architectural Renewals, and Monument New Dedications · The Augustan policy in Cyrenaica, particularly in Cyrene, marked a turning point in the relationship between Rome and the North African region. Augustus’s interest manifested through numerous restoration efforts and changes in the function of architecturally refined and symbolically significant monuments – such as the Hellenistic Gymnasium, which was transformed into a Roman agora and a site of imperial cult. It also included new dedications of buildings and porticoes in the Agora, as well as restoration work on important sacred structures like the Temples of Zeus and Demeter, as well as on major infrastructure such as the wall and gate of the Acropolis. Of particular interest is the discovery of a votive deposit within the cella of the Temple of Demeter, which can very likely be linked to the monument’s rededication by M. Sufenas Proculus in the name of Augustus.
