Abstract

Plautine comedy revolves around his masks: through the connotation and visuals of the conventional types on stage, Plautus found a practical language with his audience. The ancient iconographic documentation can contribute to restoring the visual dimension of the ancient play by giving an idea of the appearance of the characters, also in view of contemporary performances. The aim is to investigate the palliatae of the Sarsinate and, thanks to the comparison with pithy masks found in Lipari, assess whether it is possible to identify physiognomic peculiarities, particularly of the Senex masks.
