Produced by the University of Urbino and the Cultural Heritage Office of the Archdiocese of Pesaro, this volume presents the first comprehensive synthesis of the archaeological research undertaken at the Metropolitan Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Pesaro, in Italy’s Marche region, ahead of the full scholarly publication of the excavations and ongoing investigations. For the first time, the focus extends beyond the cathedral’s remarkable Early Christian and medieval mosaic pavements to embrace the architectural history of the monument as a whole, a building that has preserved and transformed this heritage for more than sixteen centuries. The volume traces the evolution of the cathedral from its origins as a 5th-century Early Christian basilica to its present role as the principal church of Pesaro. Its architectural phases are reconstructed and examined in relation to the mosaics, their imagery and symbolism are explored, and the wider archaeological and historical context is brought into sharper focus. Published in both Italian and English, the book reflects the international significance of the site and of the research that continues to reshape our understanding of its history. The Cathedral of Pesaro was founded during the age that tradition long described as “dark”, but which history now recognises as one of the most creative and brilliant periods of civilisation: the Middle Ages. Above all, this volume is a journey into the Middle Ages.
