Abstract

This is a study of Dante and Petrarch. It is a slow, contemplative journey into the realm of the imagination, where the possibility of thought takes shape. It is this very power that will be evoked as “the things of love” along the ascent leading from Hell to Paradise, from Francesca to Beatrice, which the sage follows once moved by his first love. Images of thought from the realm of the possible intellect. The comparison is drawn not only with the verses of the "Divine Comedy", but also with the great critical literature on Dante’s poetic thought, with the figure of Erich Auerbach and Bruno Nardi’s research on Averroism-masters in the study of Dante. Yet in the “Vico degli strami”, the guide was Giorgio Agamben and his profane prophecy concerning “the intellect of love”. From Petrarch, a collection of love songs. Human and earthly passion that becomes an act of the will in the autumn of the Middle Ages, as the “dolce stil novo” draws to a close. A woman named Laura. A reflection on love in the solitude of the self. Finally, there is politics to be discovered. The De Monarchia as the power of a higher imagination. The philosophical oxymoron of power restored to the possibility of anarchy. And Petrarch, who approaches such a figure in a letter on the events surrounding Cola di Rienzo - though addressed to the people of Rome -in "Sine nomine". A chance occurrence: the human being.
