This short article clarifies the “vexata questio” of the birth of Ippolito de’ Medici, the illegitimate son of Giuliano de’ Medici and a lady of Urbino, Pacifica Brandani. One of the key points of the issue concerns a document from Urbino, contained in the “Book of Exposed” of the Confraternity of Santa Maria della Misericordia, certifying the illegitimate birth of the future Cardinal Ippolito de' Medici. This document is published here in its entirety and compared with other contemporary documentary typologies found in the Urbino archives.
