The topic of training professional skills in the field of education is a highly debated topic in literature and, in recent years, has also been the protagonist of part of the political discussion. Educational professionalism has found, in fact, a normative recognition after a long legislative process ended with Law No. 205 in 2017 which governs the professions of socio-pedagogical professional educators, of socio-pedagogical professional health educators and of education itself. This article presents the origin and development of the concept of competence by ad-dressing its construct complexity and constitutive characteristics in professional training. The problematic issue of the relationship between theory and practice is tackled in the light of the integrative and professionalizing perspectives aimed at developing ‘knowing how to act’ in educational contexts
